Meanwhile at the D&C Chili blog

I’m almost afraid to do this, but check out what’s going on at the Chili blog discussion of the Jena, LA situation. There’s a post up suggesting that we should all ignore it, that the “activist and media” troublemakers have caused all the problems:

Is this a case of something getting out of hand? Is this being blown out of proportion by the media and activists alike?

(snip)

I fault those that are thirsty for a story. This hype is not helping the problem.

And from the comments:

Budman: jesse jackson and al sharpton are pigs. hate them.

Actually they are pond scum - I like pigs as we go to see ‘ricky’ at Sprngdale farm. We are still looking for Lucy — she has some splainin to do….

I actually wish someone would bring these two up on charges of hate crimes, race baiting, race something == They are probably the two most racist people I have ever heard in my life.

Later on, on there’s some joking about tasering commenter Renchick because she questions authority (I think that’s what this is about):

mr. naysayer: let me introduce the two of you…

Taser, this is renchick

Renchick, this is taser.

One commenter has a strange obsession with teaching a “Mexican curriculum” in Oregon, something she no doubt heard about on Fox News or the Rush Limbaugh show. She also agrees with the pig/pond scum characterization.

Mia: Is it wrong of me to think it is wrong for Oregon Schools to adapt a Mexican curriculum? Am I being racist?

Later

Mia: So, let’s refer to Jessie as pond scum, no one like that.

What about oregon Schools???

And here’s some more from my favorite D&C loony, Mr. Naysayer:

Mr. Naysayer: but there sure was alot of blacks that headed down to Jena. you think they all knew the facts of the case? or do you think they followed based on the 2’s call for protest?

Good thing the D&C has that disclaimer up (see the comments here). Let’s close on a happier note, though, with Lee Strong’s wise words:

Lee: Having taught for some 12 years now and seen the ideas the young folks pick up at home, I can tell you racism and prejudice live.

Those comments, jokes, and names so many people use and think no one hears, the kids hear all too well.

I’ve had to correct students for terms they use - and they are genuinely surprised.

The fears people express when they are around people of different races is another sign. I remember when teaching at a suburban school some kids were terrified to go into the city becuase that’s where certain people live.

Or a conversation I recently had with a store clerk about the proposed WalMart in Greece in which she said she and her husband opposed because WalMart attracted “those kinds of people.”

It lives. We’ve just done a better job of disguising it in many cases.

Then our kids show what we really think.

Commenter testudo is good too:

testudo: Why would blacks need these two to make us mad? And does that say that when they speak, all black people get mad? C’mon! We are not sheep. There’s a lot more than what these two say in life. I think they fuel the fire, but nooses hanging from trees is the problem.

If anything, they get whites mad - look at the reaction on this blog. It switched mostly from the main issue to these two people, and your anger towards them.

Typical. I’ve stopped spending so much time over there. Even when it’s not overt racism, there’s low-level stuff going on. Always.
