The Independence Party Line
The D&C mentions a couple local races where candidates are vying for the Independence Party line, in addition to their Dem or GOP line. These will be decided in Tuesday’s
primary. I haven’t done a scientific study (yet) but from what I’ve seen over the past couple years, I can’t see rhyme or reason to what gets you an Independence Party endorsement. Any of you readers have an idea? Highest bidder? What?
The article mentions these races:
* Irondequoit: Town Supervisor (write-in), Town Justice, 2 open Town Board seats (write-in)
But there’s a few other folks going for the Independence line:
* County Leg District 1 (Ogden, Parma, Sweden) - Todd Dunn (D) is going for a write-in against incumbent Dick Yolevich (R).
* County Leg District 8 (Webster) - Carmen Gumina (D) is going for a write-in against incumbent Dave Malta (R).
* County Leg District 16 (Irondequoit) - Vinnie Esposito (D) is going up against Peter Kelderhouse (R). (This is the seat being vacated by Stephanie Aldersley.)
* Henrietta Supervisor - Michael Yudelson (R) is going up against incumbent Jim Breese (R).
* Henrietta Town Justices - there’s four (R) candidates vying for 3 positions on the R and I lines. If you’re super-interested you can look it up.
* Mendon: Town Supervisor - Ian McNabb (D) is going for a write-in against Jeffery Babcock (R). (This is the seat being vacated by embattled Mendon Dem Moe Bickwheat.)
* Mendon: Town Council - 2 Dems are going up against 2 GOPers. Oddly, 1 of each D&R got the Independence endorsement, with at least one additional Independence write-in opportunity.
* Pittsford: Town Justice - Mike Nolan (D) is going up against incumbent Fred Gallina (R).
Whew! That’s a lotta Independence primarying. Anyone I missed?

If you cross all your ts and dot your is and get the application in on time and cow tow on bended knee, you get the nod from the Independence line.
The Independence line is funny. Often times in the County races only the incumbents receive the Indy line. Being involved in Todd Dunn’s campaign I we knew going into this write in bid just how difficult it would be. Most Independence party voters do not even realize they belong to a political party ~ they thought registering “Independence” was registering “Independent” this makes it doubly hard to do a write in. Basically Todd’s write in bid boiled down to who knew who ~ and we didn’t know enough folks to get it through. That coupled with the fact that some people no matter how good the directions were at the polling place wrote Dunn somewhere other than on the paper (like the plastic cover as on EI told me)…oh well the general is around the corner and Parmas Dems are still fighting to get good progressive government elected in the Town and the County Leg.
