6 months since “Mission Accomplished” Anniversary - How are we doing?
Has anything really changed since I wrote this post? Check out the Feb 2007 Op-ed by General Odom.
We have finally received the famed Petraeus report or, what it really was, simple testimony to Congress. For all the hoopla - he could have dialed it in and gotten back to the business of standing up the Iraqi’s like he was supposed to do in oh 2004. The again did anything change since he wrote this Op-ed in 2006?
Or read Greenwald’s concise history of Petraeus. It has sourced material/quotes from General Petraeus going back many years.
The bigger question is who wrote “the Petraeus report”, does it really say anything different? Check out Jon Stewart’s dissection of Petraeus.
If only there was another opinion by someone local like, oh, General Batiste.
Then we have our Congressmen - Jim Walsh maybe changes his mind. Randy Kuhl is in favor of a military junta - OK - Strong words but when he says…
I’m confident that General Petraeus is the most competent, qualified, objective individual to determine how this country should proceed in Iraq.
He forgets that the civilians are in charge of the military which means U.S. means you and me. So, for Randy Kuhl the rubberstamping continues - Walsh might change his mind and Tom Reynolds is so tied to Bush that Powers should have a field day.
It has been 180 days (one complete Friedman Unit or FU for short) since the 4 year anniversary of “Mission accomplished”.
On March 16, 2007 the number of dead American soldiers was 3203 .
By September, 16, 2007 the number dead American soldiers in Iraq is 3781
That is 578 fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters, sons and daughters who are gone as time marches on towards the inevitable withdrawal.
Senators Clinton and Schumer, Congresswoman Slaughter, Congressmen Kuhl, Reynolds, and Walsh where will we be 30 days from today?

Republicans have just said that we can expect on average 2 dead Americans every day of this war, 15 injured every day, and war waged at a cost of over $300 million per day.
Republicans like to talk about how not winning this war will make us vulnerable. First of all, we did win. Hussein is gone and Iraq has a fledgling democracy. Mission Accomplished! Stop moving the d— goal posts. Second of all, spending ourselves into a bottomless abyss of financial debt is another way of making us vulnerable.
