D&C Editorial Board almost swipes Maggie Brooks
The D&C editorial board’s feel good campaign for Maggie Brooks continues unabated today. The D&C Editorial Board wrote this in today’s paper. In summary, it urged (my words below)
- Maggie to actively campaign and respond to local issues.
- Residents to write letters to the D&C because the Brooks doesn’t have to respond to the Ed Board but should respond to residents
- The D&C Board would print these letters.
But StLo? Sounds like the D&C wants Maggie to respond to the local issues. Didn’t the piece also say
Increasingly, this page has been receiving letters about such issues as the county’s $100 million budget gap over the next two years and the proposed Renaissance Square project. Lately, both online and in letters, readers have been complaining about the county’s “F” rating in economic performance and a new state audit that criticized county operations.
Why would you say that this is a feel good campaign for Brooks?
Well - it was this line that sent me over the top (my emphasis)
This page will occasionally print some of the concerns residents express with the hope that Brooks will change her mind and talk about the issues.
I like that the D&C is reaching out to its readers and residents but lack of oversight and critical analysis created this monster manifested in its current form as the Brook’s administration arrogance.
I don’t want occasional letters. I want continued focus on Monroe County problems and solutions. I don’t want feel good. I want focused analysis. D&C do your job.
Sure Brooks doesn’t have a major opponent (I was actually impressed that the D&C acknowledged Brooks actually has an opponent). But focus on the rubberstamping legislature.
I would argue that a Brooks administration would really have to change if faced with a Democratic Majority in the Legislature.
Maybe we would actually be able to address and solve issues.
Or we are going to get more of this… from today’s editorial piece
It was disappointing that, when Brooks’ office was contacted for a response last week, spokesman John Durso said the county executive didn’t have to respond to the Editorial Board.

Stlo7, I agree with analysis of the situation and wanting it to make it better. Unfortunately, we are going to get more of what was written below:
“Spokesman John Durso said the county executive didn’t have to respond to the Editorial Board.”
He right when he has she doesnt’ have to respond. Free country, right?
They are right to say “oh,yeah, if want to be re-elected, you really should respond.”
He is right to say “Yeah well, we are going to be re-elected anyway”.
They are right to feel that the power of the local print media should be respected because its editorials should have some sway in the election.
He is right to feel that print media no longer has any sway or at least in this particular election.
And the D&C knows it no longer holds sway - which is why they wrote the editorial in the first place.
Cheers,
Bigboy
Yep, total F-U mentality. I see more of this coming our way. Let’s get Patrick Christopher elected.
Ah Bigboy are we perhaps actually agreeing here? I don’t know why the D&C wrote the op-ed and your speculation makes sense. I wasn’t’ kind in my post.
Can Durso get away with this stuff? Sure - as long as the public lets him. How does the public know? Well - They get their news Via TV and the newspaper.
The newspaper and the rest of the media helped created this mess.
Let’s tie this to COMIDA. The D&C had a great article covering the public hearings at the MC Legislature, it appeared the next day. When will the next article on COMIDA be written? Who knows. No dig on the article, but I believe you could really dig into COMIDA and shed light in that area.
Any takers when the next COMIDA article will be written? Same with most everything this administration does. Ren square etc. Cover it like a blanket and give people a chance to respond. Force them to, because they no longer control the debate.
The question is, is the D&C up to the task?
How about a write-in campaign for Andrew Stainton.
He right when he has she doesnt’ have to respond. Free country, right?
It’s a sad day when elected officials ignore their duties and their supporters shrug and say “free country.”
