Really cool library programs - Books Sandwiched-In
Yes - one of our under-appreciated resources in this community is the Monroe County Library. One of the many reasons I get upset when our Country Exec threatens it instead of engaging it in discourse - for whatever reason.
They have two programs that are of interest. Thursday Thinkers (programs not yet published) and Books Sandwiched In. I just got notified of Books Sandwiched In line-up.
All Books Sandwiched In programs are 12:12 to 12:52 @ the Gleason Auditorium @ the Central Library. Check them out.
This is a political blog so here are the political titles that might be of interest. but check out the entire program. There are reviews of books about Marconi, an alternate history novel, a book about Eisenhower, the London Cholera Outbreak, and American eating habits.
Here are the polical titles
Presidential Courage: Brave Leaders and How They Changed America 1789-1989 by Michael Beschloss
The Assault on Reason by Al Gore
Infidel by Ayaan Hirsi Ali

Presidential Courage:
Brave Leaders and How They Changed
America 1789-1989
By Michael Beschloss
Popular historian Beschloss sees animportant role for individual leadership that, at least at times, rises above political calculation. The courage he sees in Adams, Jackson, Lincoln and others differs from stubbornness or inflexibility. He gives us a reference point to try to gauge the current crop of Presidential contenders.

The Assault on Reason
By Al Gore
Should the political platform of any American administration influence the output of scientists working for governmental agencies? Gore maintains that is happening at the FDA, NASA, NOAA and other agencies. He also says that as a society we have moved away from an openminded embracing of empirical findings and are willing to listen only to “facts†that support our own beliefs. Is the book self-promotion for the author or is he warning us about a growing problem? And what does he say we should do
about it and why?

Infidel
By Ayaan Hirsi Ali
Ali is a forceful exponent of women’s rights within Islam. The Somalia born Ali sought
refuge in the Netherlands where she rose to fame as a member of parliament and as a
collaborator in a documentary on the repression of women in the Muslim faith. She admits to falsifying documents to obtain Dutch citizenship. Her expulsion from the Netherlands led to the collapse of the government. She recounts her life in her wartorn homeland and her own experience growing up as a Muslim woman. Does her point of view resonate with western women?

Hey, thanks for the plug! These really are terrific programs, and we’re hoping to make them available as podcasts from the libraryweb.org site later this year.
When will the Thursday thinkers programs be announced. I remember the one on Fundamentalism - it was simply awesone - lining up all the diverse religious leaders to discuss fundamentalism.
The podcast idea is great.
