D&C editorial on comptroller report
The D&C has quite a good editorial about the comptroller audit which found that Jack Doyle improperly used public money to entice AirTran to come to Rochester. They make the very valid point that, yes, bringing AirTran here was good, but that it should have been done legally. And they hit on one of our favorite topics: the county GOP’s Cheney-like obsession with secrecy.
Not only should Brooks react to these findings, but she should respond to the criticism that she has avoided the tough questions about progress on Renaissance Square, the county budget deficit, Water Authority oversight and COMIDA itself. This latest episode shows how this agency became a pliable political tool.
The county’s defense is that the “true” intent of the state grants was to aid AirTran. But few beyond those putting this deal together knew of that particular truth.
The public was given the follow-the-pea shell game. Brooks should come from behind the curtain and talk about the county’s penchant for secrecy.
