No private funding for Ren Square
I don’t usually like to do two posts at the same time, but WHAM 13’s thorough coverage of Ren Square contrasts nicely with Syracuse News10Now’s shameless anti-Maffei piece. Last week, WHAM reporter Evan Dawson asked a lot of tough questions about Ren Square…and got no real answers. In particular, it was unclear how much private money had been raised for the project. Now we know how much: none.
Last week. Project Manager Mark Ballerstein said, “We’re still in the quiet phase. We’re not really saying how much has been raised. We’ve had a lot of discussions and presentations, but we’re not really ready to state that yet.”
Monday, Monroe County sent this clarification: “We are working on raising private funds and donors are expressing interest, but no private funds have been raised to date… When we have private funds to announce, we will.”
Even though the county has not raised any private money yet, they’re still planning to use private money to build the theater and then they’ll rely on private fundraising to cover the annual operating costs.
Here’s Joe Morrelle’s take:
State Assemblyman Joe Morelle (D)Â said, “The fact that we’re now more than three years into this process and they don’t know what it will cost borders on malfeasance. I won’t support another dime of state money until they come up with private money as well.”

Joe Morelle is a joke. Does he really think that hollow threat is going to cover his mass for not running a candidate against this administration? Stomp your feet all you like Little Joe - we’re not paying attention!
Say what you will — he may be able to kill the state money for it.
Yep - Exile is right here….
Exile- really nice catch
Would be nice to think he could accomplish that Exile…but lately everything that comes out of his mouth is doublespeak for some hidden agenda on his part. This will have to be seen to be believed.
My great fear is that they will demolish several acres and then not build anything.
I see a trend here…tinfoil hat time: Is the GOP trying to destroy our cities? Defunding levee work and rescue ops in New Orleans, O’Reilly telling terrorists to bomb San Francisco, and now…this.
