Bowers Goofs on Campaign Literature

Jim Bowers and Lovely Warren are going at it over some campaign literature. Warren rightly claims that Bowers’ literature is misleading, and that it gives the impression that he’s currently a City Councilman.

Question: Does anyone really believe that a Political Science Professor (Bowers) and former Mayor (Johnson, Bowers’ campaign manager) don’t know the difference between:

“Vote for City Councilman Jim Bowers”

and

“Vote Jim Bowers for City Council” ?

From the D&C:

Bowers said the literature isn’t meant to suggest that he currently sits on City Council, but the brochure has ignited a war of words between him and opponent City Council incumbent Lovely Warren in one of the more hotly contested Democratic primaries on Sept. 18.

Warren, who was appointed to the council in May, said she has filed a complaint with the local Fair Campaign Election Practices Committee over Bowers’ campaign material.

We know that Warren’s in the Gannt camp, and obviously Bowers has Johnson’s support. Does anyone have any other info about this race?

what sort of info? like how crazy is bowers and how much of a minion is warren? personally, that section of the city would be better off with many others, but i guess this is the choice. warren is very young, giving her the potential to grow into something beyond just another assembly staffer. bowers is older and probably is at his ‘peak’. i am just glad i don’t live up there. most people seem to be avoiding this with the proverbial 10 ft pole because although warren is not a great candidate, bowers isn’t really any better and people don’t like to piss off gantt. all that being said, there is never any place for misleading lit. unacceptable.

Yes, like that.

I love the D&C quote: “one of the more hotly contested Democratic primaries on Sept. 18.” — to my knowledge, thanks to behind-the-scenes MCDC maneuvering, that’s the ONLY primary in the county this year. The “party unity” thinking may be smart in county-wide races, but in the city, given registration, it effectively eliminates voters from the equation completely. So much for democracy.

Extremely frustrating for City residents.

Well - remember Dan Doyle? I guess if it was good enough there….

Did this get any mention in the D&C at the time? I don’t think so….

Very similar. Doyle was close enough to the line that neither Lindley, nor Kehoe, nor Frazee filed a complaint, right? I’m not defending his sign, but maybe the old-school media would have reported on it if one of the other candidates had made a stink. Maybe not. Who knows.

What line are you talking about and do you know if anyone complained.

I’m not looking for a discussion here - I’m drawing a parallel that says - this sign gets reported and the other is long forgotten.

Too many hypotheticals here.

I meant it as a question and phrased it poorly - I don’t know anything about the Doyle business other than what I read here.

wasn’t hoping the media would pick up on stupidity jimmy carter’s mistake against reagan in/after the debates? anyway, it is a tricky situation because the media sucks at research so you want to leak stuff, but if you leak stuff you are considered in the wrong. and for highlighting ‘regular’ mistakes you are deemed whiny.
