Crossing any Bridges today?
File this under boring is good. Actually file this under services some people take for granted before and after they complain about their taxes. No this isn’t a tax discussion. Taxes we know are an investment. This is merely pointing out a sound investment.
A lot of the services we receive as a result of paying taxes is transparent, behind the scenes, boring stuff. Certainly not all that exciting stuff like tax dollars funding elected officials to conduct partisan activities but boring everyday stuff like - maintaining the roads.
I caught this in the paper this morning. Here is a report from NYS DOT on New York Bridges. It is broken down by county. Anyway check it out here. Data is current as of August 6th.
What was particularly interesting was this point.
The state requires all highway bridges to be inspected at least every two years and is one of the few states in the nation that requires bridge inspection teams to be headed by licensed professional engineers who have undergone specific training.
OK - I’m glad that we don’t have someone’s distant cousin twice removed inspecting our bridges. If we do they need to be licensed professional engineer. Oh - that means we probably pay a higher price for these people but - frankly who do you want inspecting bridges?
It looks like after a quick scan that all our Monroe County Bridges have been inspected since 2005.
I’ll poke some more you can see all the bridges in NYS as broken down by county.

Well, this ought to scare you if you drive over any bridges in NY.

Well - To each their own. Is this “true” or one of those I saw it on the internet things? Seriously
The post is about NYS bridge inspection. One of those hidden things that taxes cover and we don’t even think about.
Reading the report there are a lot of structurally deficit bridges - including Monroe County. However, by definition - these are classified that way because of weight limitations. The question there of course is do people follow the rules.
Not scared yet.
