The Republican Noise Machine Clamors On

With all due respect that I could possibly credit to Mr. Bob Lonsberry global warming is real, is a problem, and we need to do something about it. This Wednesday Mr. Lonsberry got his panties in a bunch and decided to proclaim that Global Warming is indeed a fictitious event. In doing so Lonsberry claimed that “global warming is not true”, that “it’s all a crock”, and that organizations such as the Democrat Party, academics, and anchormen “cannot refute us so they shout us down.” Before I get into the irony in the outrage that a radio personality/on-line “journalist” has with the established media I strongly encourage you to read this, this, and this.

I find it difficult to understand exactly where Mr. Lonsberry is coming from. Sure, I have a keen respect for liberty and strongly encourage people to follow their passions and pursue happiness, but facts are facts even if they are not pleasurable facts and the facts on this one are clear: The world is getting warmer. I’m not a scientist, but I know that in business if an organization is not forward thinking then sooner or later it is going to get left behind in its industry. The rest of the world sees this as a problem and is becoming more green and we are at risk of being left behind. I fail to see how the facts surrounding global warming can be misconstrued as an attack on decent Americans civil liberties, which seems to be Mr. Lonsberry’s major beef. I drive a car and I like to drive my car to all different locations, but if there were a cheaper alternative to filling it up with gas then I would like it even more. I fail to see how finding alternative sources that might contribute to keeping the global temperature down and might possibly keep more money in my wallet is bad. Mr. Lonsberry, I realize that you are not a paid spokesperson for the Republican Party, but I strongly urge you to cease purporting their talking points as facts and to actually engage in real, meaningful dialogue that can be of use to us all.

GREAT post!! Mr Lonsbury always makes me think of that old joke-”What do you call a guy with no arms and legs who falls in the swimming pool?………………….” (I know, poor taste)

Paraphrasing Lonsbilly: Some smart-aleck college professors got so irate about a pickup-truck driving mormon that they got together and made the whole thing up! It’s a conspiracy, I tell you! They’re trying to take away my freedom!

My God, Bob. How embarassing for you. There’s as close to near unanimity of opinion as you can get amongst atmospheric scientists. The only disagreement is around how quickly catastrophic change will happen (within our lifetimes?).

“The evidence for warming having happened on the planet is unequivocal,” said U.S. government scientist Susan Solomon, who also is a member of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

“We can see that in rising air temperatures, we can see it in changes in snow cover in the Northern Hemisphere. We can see it in global sea rise. It’s unequivocal,” she said.

And Lonsbilly thinks she just wants to take away his pickup truck. Wait, let me guess… evolution’s just a ‘theory’, too, right? Gravity? Hah! I’ll believe it when I see it!

Earth to Bob: You’re not smarter than the thousands of independent researchers who have all reached the same conclusion: it’s getting hotter, quickly, and humans are mostly responsible. Science is MUCH more capable of reaching a truthful conclusion than you, or your political party, or your cult religion.

Look, I don’t like the truth either. It stinks. I really, really wish this wasn’t happening. But shouting “liar liar” isn’t going to change things.

We can debate about how to stop this. We can discuss the costs of doing something vs. the costs of not doing anything. We can even debate whether or not we should bother to try to do anything at all.

But you simply cannot argue the scientific facts.

PS: Bob, the moon landing was real, too.

The newsweek article that you linked to is superb, I hadn’t read that before.

Maybe it’s time to do sdome digging into Lonsberry history - like why he was really let go by Gannett, his marriages, his racist comments about the former mayor - and so raise doubts about his credibility.
