Everything that they say sounds like it was ghostwritten

Because it is. The LA Times reports that the much ballyhooed reports from Petraeus and Crocker will be ghostwritten by The Decider’s staff:

Despite Bush’s repeated statements that the report will reflect evaluations by Petraeus and Ryan Crocker, the U.S. ambassador to Iraq, administration officials said it would actually be written by the White House, with inputs from officials throughout the government.

Kuhl, Reynolds, and Walsh have all made a big to do about waiting for “straight talk” from Petraeus before committing themselves to another Friedman Unit or two of surging. Will they still put so much stock in Petraeus’s report now that they know it’s more propaganda from the White House? Sadly, we all know that they will.

That’s a certifiable statement if ever there was one. They wouldn’t know straight talk if it bit them.

Translation: The spinmasters need to massage this a bit more before we decide to put our sheep suits on.

[...] On September 11 (how tasteful a choice of date is that), David Petraeus will deliver will deliver what most observers expect to be an overly optimistic report on how things stand in Iraq.ÂÂ Though the report is widely called the “Petraeus report”, it will be written by the White House.
