Current Communications Layoffs

Channel 13 reports that Current Communications, which has received significant tax breaks from COMIDA, has laid off more workers. Remember when they promised 180 new jobs? That would have made a total of 262 employees, but now they’re down to only 125.

Even Republicans are starting to get sick of this. From Channel 13:

Henrietta Town Supervisor Jim Breese (R), attended the ceremony. He said he was disappointed in news of the job cuts.
“It creates a lot of doubt in people’s minds about what these companies say when they have these fancy ceremonies,” he said. “It’s getting so when someone says something, we have to be skeptical about it, hope what they say is true, but be ready for disappointment.”

Monroe County Legislator Ted O’Brien (D) says they’re being overly optimistic.

“The image that the county is trying to produce that we’re creating lots of good paying jobs really doesn’t mesh with reality. The fact is our job growth is anemic,” he said.

I’m sure all is forgiven at the county level.

Costs you that much just to get a couple people into the Republican Ball, did you know that?

This is funny, too:

A county spokeswoman said the county works with companies on such announcements, and it’s not the county’s fault if a company’s fortunes change.

Don’t blame us! It’s not our fault!

what i find funny is how r’s tell us that gov’t doesn’t work and free market is everything and how we dems throw taxpayer dollars down the drain trying to meddle. then you get r’s who give away taxpayer money to boost the free market, and it still doesn’t work. and they say, we can’t help it when the economic climate changes. no kidding, so why give out the money in the first place? we would be better served if they gave the tax break to a family who was threatening to move elsewhere.

There is a statewide effort, as reported by The New York Times, to revoke tax breaks to companies that promise job creation and local investment, and then don’t deliver on the job creation and local investment. Although the Times article referred specifically to tax breaks under NY State’s Enterprise Zone program, I would sure hope that someone in Albany decides to take a look at COMIDA and similar programs. (Perhaps this could be a position taken by the Dems in the upcoming Monroe County elections)

And I’m sure you will be shocked, but WalMart was specifically mentioned as one of those companies that hasn’t lived up to its promises.

Radio and TV stations have been laying off people for years. Broadcasting is one of the most insecure professions out there. You want a guaranteed job for life, then become a U.S. Supreme Court Judge or the Pope. Now that Cheap Channel has sold Channel 13, you can expect even more layoffs as the new company’s pencil-pushers come in and see where they can squeeze every dollar they can out of the place. Who knows pretty soon Don Alhart might be anchoring all the newscasts, sports and weather by himself.

My money says the day care center, listed in the recent COMIDA handouts will be pulling the same stunt down the road. Remember the day care center, and their middle man.
