A primary opponent for Maffei?
We’re hearing rumors that Syracuse mayor Matthew Driscoll may challenge Dan Maffei in the Democratic primary in NY-25.
Driscoll is no political neophyte: he’d only run if he had reason to believe that he would have a strong chance in the general against Republican incumbent Jim Walsh were he to win the nomination. The fact that two strong Democratic candidates (Maffei and Driscoll) are running — or are possibly considering running — in this district goes to show how vulnerable Jim Walsh is.

seriously? If I am not mistaken Maffei and Driscoll are close so much so that I believe Maffei ran his campaign to get elected as mayor. Am I right about this?
It’s weird, but my source is very good. Maffei was indeed Driscoll’s campaign manager.
IMHO, there’s nothing wrong with a solidly progressive district like this one getting two strong candidates, each of whom would probably beat Walsh.
I will stress, though, that Driscoll hasn’t announced yet. Don’t be surprised if nothing comes of this.
Maybe Maffei is “passing the torch” on to his friend Driscoll?
I doubt it. Maffei’s in it to win it.
Maffei is a good candidate, but it’s no shock that when you have a weak Republican incumbent in a district with a +3.4 Cook PVI for Democrats, you’re going to see a lot of people think about running.
I can assure that from my own personal conversations with Dan Maffei that he is not passing the torch to anyone and that he is hard at work to get elected this cycle.
