People are not going to elect a candidate that doesn’t have many answers. Every time he was asked a direct question regarding the status quo…he paused, and didn’t really have an answer. And if his mainstream issue is going to be reinstating the train, no one will listen. People don’t want to ride the bus let alone the train. He needed to hit hard on the transparency issue, which he just skirted and didn’t tell us anything we don’t already know.

One example was funding of projects - he said we have to live with what we have…not a popular answer. He should have hit harder with Magpie’s financial trickerly (i.e. reassessments in suburbia to fund the county coffers) rather than try to be creative and tell people that he can make do with what he has. He obviously hasn’t taken into account a major deficit, so he should have stuck to reeling in spending and salaries, and family hiring and nepotism issues and hit hard on the impact that has on the homeowner. He should have also blasted her staff members who are all double dipping and running the towns. The Water Authority would have been a good one to touch on - instead of silence…as well as the control Minerik has on Magpie and her crew.

People will listen to an agressive progressive, not a creative idealist.

  4. You’ll notice I called him and asked about the scandals under the Brooks administration and improving accountability - a softball. He blew it.

  6. I only caught the second half of the program, but he seemed ok. He seems to have a good grasp of city planning and so on, but doesn’t have a good idea of our specific situation. We can teach him. If the Democrats decide to cross-endorse, they could teach him.

Perhaps your readers should be aware that before returning to broadcasting, Mr. Smith was an active member of the Democratic Party. Therefore I consider him to be bias when it comes to interviewing candidates for office. Anyone who listens to Mr. Smith’s show on a regular basis can detect his true political feelings…and those normally favor the democrats while a republican candidate can expect tougher questions tossed at him/her. I have to be honest with all of you in that I am not a regular listener to WXXI anymore every since I discovered the sham that station is pulling on the general public. While going on the airwaves pleading poverty, the station’s top five managers are making close to a half-million dollars a year in salaries. While I do not begrudge anyone from making a decent living, I think it is wrong for a not-for-profit agency to dole out six figure salaries to a few people while threatening to remove “Morning Edition and other NPR programs unless people donate money. Sounds more like those TV shows featuring those preachers asking for your social security check in the name of God. Sorry if I got off the subject, but I had to offer my opinion.

I felt on multiple occasions during the interview that Smith *was* trying to help Stainton, and was also trying to help him by leading him in a direction that Stainton just didn’t follow.

As far as Exile’s comment regarding remember who is President…

…the President has his own speech writers. If Stainton needs a coach that badly, or needs someone to do his thinking and speaking - he’s screwed. Remember - Magpie was a journalist and she’s got the news anchor desk BS down to a science…”She ain’t good lookin’ but she sure can play”…

Stainton gets credit for throwing his hat in the ring, but perhaps he should have turned the heat up under Morrelle for NOT having put forth a candidate. Which is a very good question - what exactly is Joe Morrelle’s intent?
