MC Water Authority puts at least one cookie back in the jar

It’s a start:

The Monroe County Water Authority announced Friday it has recovered $144,316 in payments and legal fees after a state audit revealed it may have illegally and indirectly contracted with a company owned by former executive director John Stanwix — even as he remained on the water authority payroll.

Well, good. Now everything is right with the world again and we can just let this…uh, wait a minute:

“Something improper happened with this contract. It appears that services were never provided and it may have violated state law. It is apparent that someone is not telling the truth,” DiNapoli said in a statement.

But, but, how could this be? Surely the Water Authority is being open, transparent, and accountable? I mean, they’re a bi-partisan panel, both Republican AND Conservative.

Democrats want the water authority abolished and folded into county government.

The water authority is an independent agency and not part of county government, but the County Legislature appoints the seven-member board.

Meaning, the GOP majority in the Leg appoints them.

There’s a clear pattern of a lack of accountability for an extended time at the water authority,” said Legislator Travis Heider, D-Brighton.

Of course, there’s no real truth in the matter, right? It’s all “he said, she said”, right? There’s no big old pile of evidence building up, right?

Good things only happen when Maggie’s up for re-election.
