Another day without Wegmans Plastic bags

It seems like it been a long time since April 2nd when I first noticed Wegmans introduced reusable bags. They have some a long way since a cashier put my newly purchased reusable bag in a plastic bag. I think Wegmans really did something great by introducing these reusable bags. How have they been going? Well. I don’t know (I sent Wegmans an email and am awaiting an answer) but here are my observations.

I’ve noticed more and more reusable bags being used by customers. It seemed that the adoption of these bags was a little slow. I’ve really noticed a lot of people using them. In fact last week, for the first time, the person in back of me at the register also had reusable bags.

I haven’t used a Wegmans plastic bag since April 2nd. That includes 4 trips where my reusable bags never made it back into my car (they were still at home) and a 2 trips where my reusable bags never made it from my car to Wegmans.

The cashiers each pack the bags differently. Some put the bag in the cart and fill it up some used the bags with supplied eyelets. To each there own.

So all this drivel is that Wegmans did a good thing about mainstreaming reusable bags.

More importantly change comes about slowly. I’m still betting that that Wegmans has a sound business case with eliminating the plastic bags.

How are other people’s experiences?

I haven’t noticed a single other customer using the re-usable bags. I’m the only one I have seen.

Except for one visit to Wegmans when I forgot to bring the re-usable bags, I have not gotten a single plastic bag from Wegmans. The nice folks at the Co-op downtown on Marshall St said “Sure, bring those Wegmans re-usable bags next time you shop here!) I’m strongly considering bringing the bags to Tops next time I shop there.

I don’t shop at Wegmans, but I do use regular canvas tote bags for my purchases. I shop at Honeoye Falls Market Place. They deduct 5 cents from my bill for every bag I bring in.( Not a big deal, and not why I use canvas, but nice just the same.) I have 6 that I use on a regular basis. Sometimes I forget, and then I ask for paper. But, really, any tote bag should work just fine. I do applaud Wegmans for trying to make a difference.

Too bad. I’ve been to the Wegmans in Pittsford, Webster (Bay and Holt), East Ave and always see people.

In fact I saw someone at a garage sale with the Wegmans reusable bag.

Again - I just think it is great that a company is trying to introduce a postive change.

I am shocked that you have only had to go to the big-w 6 times since beginning of April. I think I have gone 6 times in the past 2 weeks.

Hey that is how many time I forgot my bags at home. I’m at wegmans many many times a week. We do a lot of small shopping trips as opposed to one or two large shopping runs.

I have invented a reusable bag that fits in a pocket because I kept forgetting my reusable bags at home or in the car as well. It is washable, has a carabineer to hook it onto things and it is called ChicoBag. You can learn more about them at chicobag.com.

If the item is small enough to carry-out, then I skip it. This one time a pack of gum was ringed-up and then placed into a large plastic bag. Immediately, I removed it and gave the bag back.

Hello? What is sad is there will be customers who would request it and Wegmans would oblige.

My wife stopped into a store other than Wegmans for a quick birthday present and when presented with the Wegmans bag (she uses the new bags everywhere) the cashier attempted to ring up the bag a few times until my wife hipped her to its intended purpose.

I walked around Wegmans today … its a little thing I like to call “shopping” … looking to see if my fellow shoppers had the re-usable bags. I didn’t see a single one.

On the way home, I stopped at Skips Meat Market, and asked them if they would use a re-usable bag from Wegmans. They said sure, no problemo.

I send an e-mail to Tops asking if they were going to have a re-usable bag as well. They said the will have one in the near future. I specifically asked if I could use Wegmans bags in their store, and they specifically didn’t answer my question. Avoided it entirely. I wrote them back again asking if I could use the Wegmans bag in their store, and stated that I was NOT going to pay for another set of re-usable bags.

Hey Paige - which store were you in?

Great job asking Skips and Tops. The Tops answer was interesting.

I usually shop at the E. Henrietta Road Wegmans. It is one of the smallest stores left. But that doesn’t explain why I haven’t seen the black bags in the hands of other shoppers. Next time I go, I will ask the cashier if they get a lot of those bags coming through. I asked about 3 months ago and the cashier said most people forget to bring the black bags.

I use the bags everywhere, occasionally I forget them in the car. Today I used my wegmans’ bags at the Farmer’s market and I saw some other people using them as well. I use them at Kmart, Barnes & Noble, etc. It has never occurred to me to ask other stores if I could use them. I am in Liverpool.

“put my newly purchased reusable bag in a plastic bag.”

Same thing happened to me and my roommate. So far, the cashiers don’t seem happy about the bags. One even went so far as to try to convince me they are stupid and I should use them for something else and go back to plastic.

I switched to them mostly because they are stronger and because these types of bags have always been expensive in the past. I always recycle my plastic bags but at $.99 there are not many valid points on why not to switch to them anymore.

    Rick- I would agree.

I haven’t found any cashiers not happy about the bags but sometimes I sense they are feeding me a line - so I usually ask them if that is what they are trained to say. The answer comes back no but I did find out that they watch a 1 hour video about packing the new bags (maybe it was a video and practice for an hour).
