Surgeon General Update

Remember how we previously reported that the Surgeon General has testified about being subject to unprecedented meddling from the White House?

Elections have consequences. For one thing, we wouldn’t even have had that hearing without a Democratic congress.

But now, my favorite congressman, Henry “Sahar’s favorite Congressman” Waxman, is going to introduce the “Surgeon General Independence Act”.

I realize that not everyone is a CSPAN junkie like me. In case you want to see clips of the hearing, you can see video of the hearing here, courtesy of CSPAN, Nancy Pelosi, and Youtube.com.

Here’s my favorite clip. It’s very powerful and cuts straight to the chase. Just watch even the first few minutes if you want.

“Much of the discussion [on stem cells] was being driven by theology, ideology, pre-conceived beliefs that were scientifically incorrect. So I thought this is a perfect example of the Surgeon General being able to step forward, educate the American public as well as elected and appointed officials so that we can have, if you will, informed consent on an issue to the American public to make better decisions. I was blocked at every turn. I was told the decision had already been made. Stand down, don’t talk about it. In speeches where initially that information was put in speeches it was removed from my speeches…”

Skip to the last minute or so. It’s really interesting.

This is not a partisan issue. It’s the issue the war on science, assault on reason, and the debasement of our ideals. We have to re-establish a basic respect for science and facts in this country.

Stephen Colbert famously said, “reality has a well-known liberal bias.”

Maybe that’s why Gingrich Republicans performed “a stunning act of self-lobotomy”, and abolished the congressional Office of Technology Assessment. Maybe that’s why conservatives are trying to set up a conservative version of Wikipedia, Youtube, or the Daily Show.

And the disrespect for the truth doesn’t stop there. Case in point: Maggie Brooks lying to the press about her record as County Executive. Man About Town has more.
