The United States Conference of Mayors’ 75th anniversary
Mayor Duffy is a member of the United States Conference of Mayors. Water Buffalo Press wants to highlight their resolution on Drug Policy Reform:
Sponsored by Salt Lake City Mayor Rocky Anderson the resolution calls for:
“a New Bottom Line in U.S drug policy . . . that concentrates more fully on reducing the negative consequences associated with drug abuse, while ensuring that our policies do not exacerbate these problems or create new social problems of their own.â€
The Mayors also supported a reevaluation of “Drug War†funding to focus more funds at levels of local treatment rather than a measurement of success based on the incarceration of non-violent offenders.
That approach is cool, sensible, and has worked in European countries (I think).
There are a ton of other good resolutions taken by the conference, found here. It’s 200 pages long, but interesting.
A more concise and targeted document from the conference is their 10 point plan for fixing America.
Turns out the Conference of Mayors Leadership met with Nancy Pelosi and got her enthusiastic support for their agenda. That’s why Republican ads trying to attack “San Francisco Liberal” Nancy Pelosi will never work. Her liberal values stem from a philosophy that supports good ideas, in this case the ones that come from a bipartisan coalition of national mayors.
So good for Mayor Duffy, and good for the conference. With “a friend in the speaker’s office,” maybe the cities will be able to push for their goals on the national stage.
