Loving your enemies, with a geothermal pump thrown in

So, since this is the week I’m wearing my Christianity on my sleeve, I just got back from an amazing sermon about how Christ said “Love your enemies”, instead of kickin’ it Old Testament style and asking God to smite the crap outta them.  We have a lot more tools at our disposal these days than the Israelites did, so we don’t need to overuse the military like we’re doing.

I feel like many in our government missed their homework assignment and blew off reading “Getting to Yes” and other books that fill in the massive grey area between a strongly worded letter and whacking the crap out of an entire country.

Here’s hoping we can get more folks in office soon that “get it”.

In the meantime, it was weird coming home from that sermon, and then reading Erin Kelly’s post in the D&C political blog, about Hilary Clinton working with Sen. Inhofe of Oklahoma, one of the nuttiest of the wing nuts out there.  I mean, this guy’s seriously out there on just about every issue that counts.  But check this out:

Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, who supports strong regulation to reduce global warming, teamed up with an unlikely ally this week to add an amendment to the sweeping energy bill passed by the Senate late Thursday.

Clinton worked with Sen. James Inhofe, R-Okla., to require the federal government’s 500,000 buildings to be equipped with energy-efficient technology, including geothermal heat pumps. The pumps can slash heating and cooling costs as much as 50 percent and help reduce the burning of fossil fuels, which most scientists believe contribute to global warming.

I mean, holy crap!  How did that happen?  Did she slip him some rohypnol? What?

Not exactly.  Turns out:

Oklahoma City is home to one of the leading manufacturers of geothermal heat pumps. So even though Inhofe doesn’t believe in global warming, he does believe in helping out his home state businesses, even if it means pairing up with a New York liberal.

Ok, so it’s kind of a pork thing.  I’m ok with that in this case–I’ve been jonesing for a geothermal system for our house for years now.  I did the math 2 years ago and realized it would take about 7-10 years for the savings to pay off, compared to our current natural gas heat.   With a little help from NY state to defray the cost for “early adopters” like me, you could bring the break-even window down to 3-5 years, and jump-start geothermal biz in this area.

I’ll bet it would catch on like wildfire.  Geez, maybe I should apply for a COMIDA grant and do it myself!  (Note to self: ask Steve Minarik which local GOPers I need to donate to first.  :-) )

The problem I have with it is that Inhofe is publicly admitting hypocrisy, selling his supposed beliefs out. I am glad for the end results, I’m all for the environment and just bought some of those cool new Wegman’s bags today, but this guy is openly saying “I am a hypocrite.” I now suspect that Inhofe does believe in global warming but that big energy has a piece of him and he doesn’t want to hurt that industry. He can be bought, and in fact, he just was.
