Reworking Rochester: Invest in mass transit
This car-dependent region isn’t getting the message, however
The more the Rochester-region spreads out, with once outlying, rural towns becoming suburbanized, the more important it is that modes of transportation other than the automobile be available and utilized.Making this region appealing to outside business depends in part on a varied transportation system, one not overly reliant on the costly, gas-guzzling car commute.
That means more public investment in mass transit, particularly at the federal level, where for 50 years the multibillion-dollar transportation bill has had as its centerpiece and side dishes spending on highways.
Roads and bridges must be maintained. But the region that makes smart decisions about mass transportation may come out a winner in this era of dependence on foreign oil from unstable parts of the world.
Read the whole thing. And expect the usual whining from conservatives. Remember, for them, corporate welfare for Big Oil is ok, strategically improving life for everyday working folks is BAD.
