The Greening of Irondequoit
This is cool:
Irondequoit Supervisor Mary Ellen Heyman is leading a task force to find the best ways to conserve energy and protect the town’s environment.
See what happens when you elect a progressive? They get proactive about the future.
Over the next three months, the task force will develop recommendations for ways the town can reduce pollution and its use of energy.
It will also focus on protecting Irondequoit’s vulnerable environmental resources, like the steep slopes around Irondequoit Bay. Some of these slopes have been failing over the past few years because of the loss of trees and storm water erosion.
Are any other towns doing this? I seem to remember Brighton doing something similar recently. Hmm. What do Brighton and Irondequoit town government have in common?Â
The meeting will begin with a talk from Supervisor Mary Ellen Heyman and Ram Shrivastava, the president and CEO of Larsen Engineers. Shrivastava, a volunteer with the local Center for Environmental Information and the Rochester Green Business Network, plans to tell the task force a little about what other communities are doing. He says that some of the easiest ways to conserve energy are through lighting and water use.
I love the whole idea of the Rochester Green Business Network, especially after seeing the movie “The Corporation”, which spells out how short-sighted corporate capitalism is. Quarter-to-quarter thought ain’t gonna cut it in the long run. It reminds me of the old project management quote: “How does a project get behind? One day at a time.”
We oughta interview some of them there Green Businesses, because they’re the intersection of the past and the future, and point to how we can transition to a more progressive, sustainable economy.
Oh– if you want to go:
The Irondequoit Task Force on Environmental Sustainability will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday (5/22) at Town Hall, 1280 Titus Ave.
And it’s open to anyone, not just Irondequoiters. Find out how they do it so you can get crackin’ when a progressive government is elected in your town.

Bill Clinton’s office just sent out a group e-mail asking for stories about how we all conserve energy. Here’s an excerpt:
We all can play a role in saving our planet, and we want to hear from those of you who are ready to join the fight.
