Albany update

I realize Spitzer took a lot of heat for some of his budget compromises but there is some good news to report on the Spitzer front.

First of all, is promising even though it’s unlikely to pass:

Gov. Eliot Spitzer has pledged to introduce legislation in the next few weeks that would legalize gay marriage in New York, even while conceding the state Legislature was not ready to agree with him on the issue.

“I do not think there is a realistic shot that it gets passed, but I will submit it because it’s a statement of principle that I believe in and I want to begin that dynamic,” Spitzer said.

More importantly, Spitzer is fighting Joe Bruno hard over Bruno’s attempts to kill campaign finance reform (New York has among the weakest campaign finance laws in the country):

“The reason we are not here today with a proposal that will become law is very simple. The Republican members of the state Senate were unwilling to break their addiction to the free flow of money. It is a narcotic to which they are beholden,” said Spitzer, who was flanked by representatives of good-government groups who were at the Capitol for what they called “Reform Day.”
