Hearings on Brooks fear mongering campaign (TONIGHT!)

(bumped)

There are three public forums scheduled by the library to hear statements on the issue of Maggie Brooks’ anti-library ear mongering campaign. The first one is scheduled for TONIGHT (Thursday April 12) from 6-8 pm at the Central Library in the Kate Gleason Auditorium. The second is scheduled Monday, April 16th from 6-8 pm at the Gates Public Library 1605 Buffalo Road; and the third is scheduled for Wednesday April 18 at the Fairport Public Library at 1 Village Landing.

If you wish to speak, you must arrive at 5:30 and sign up. Everyone will be granted 2 1/2 minutes to express their views on the situation.

Please come to one if you can. We need to make our voices heard: we must not stand for Maggie Brooks’s cynical fear mongering and misusue of county resources (which is what a protracted court case would be).

Why is it necessary for people to “sign in”. Why can’t you simply attend the meeting and politely raise you hand and speak when recognized?

Is this another form of Rethuglican intimidation, or is it standard practice?

I don’t think this is intimidation. Maggie’s threats were intimidation. The library needs a to move things along and hear from as many people as possible. People will be called in order that they signed up. I think 2 and 1/2 mins a short but so it goes…

It is standard practice in the Mo Co Legislature under the current administration, but it is hardly uniform in local government. What it does is prevent someone who is inspired by something they hear from deciding on the spot to speak. In Brighton, for example, everyone is allowed to speak, although at very crowded meetings, people who sign up are given the opportunity to speak first, and if after everyone is finished speaking a first time, a person has something else to say, they are allowed a second opportunity to say something new.
