Hats off to Wegmans - step 1 in reusable bags

I know I spend a lot of time pointing out the flaws in the system. Or framed differently - I spend a lot of time “bitching”.

This weekend I was treated to a pleasant surprise after a long travel induced absence from Wegmans’ aisles. They now offer reusable bags for .99 cents per bag. They have multiple aisle displays, and the seem to be pushing them.

I know there have been canvas bags available for years. Go to Germany and you will pay .10 euro (13 cents) per plastic bag. People bag their own groceries with their own bags. Yes, I know.

What amazed me was that the Wegmans bags were designed to fit the device that currently holds the plastic bags. They have eyelets to hold them in place so the cashier can fill it. Very cool.

Great. When a large retailer like Wegmans gets behind something it creates a demand for the service.

So - I bought two and most of my loose goods fit into the bags (yes I needed a few plastic ones too).

Now for the details, Wegmans needed to engage a Canadian Company who engaged someone in China to make these non woven polypropylene bags. I guess we can’t do stuff like that in the States.

Well at least they are starting. If customers really take to this I hope the cost savings (less purchases of plastic bags) will be passed on to us.

Now, maybe they can look at their Chicken Farm.
