4 years into Iraqi Obviousiness - by the people who brought you the New Iraqi Flag.
As we approach the 4th anniversary, let’s take pause to remember the New Iraqi Flag and read General Odom’s Op-ed in the Washington Post.
Remember the new Iraqi Flaq? It was only 2 1/2 years ago when the CPA decided that a new symbol would help unite Iraq. How far have we come since? You can see posts about it here and here. You used to be able to see reporting on it (boston.com) and (CNN) but those pages are gone.
Well, Laura Bush says it isn’t that bad. One a bombing a day. Oops. Guess you are wrong on that.
Our system is stressed by our returning soldiers. Walter Reed is but a single example. Homelessness, Divorce rates, Suicides, PTSD and, of course, stop loss all await our soldiers.
No one in power wants to admit Iraq was a mistake. No political party selfishly wants to be saddled with another Vietnam. In the meanwhile, American troops are in harms way not being supported by sound policy or resources. It is numbing. In 1968 to 1972 we lost 20,000 US troops trying to figure out an exit strategy.
Between the dead American soldiers (3203 by last count), car bombs, the mass kidnappings of Iraqis, and the murder of Iraqi civilians by American Soldiers and Insurgents, the mind boggles. Then there is Iraq itself. The other day it was reported that 60 people died in a car bomb attack. 60 people. Here 60 bodies were found. 60 people.
The ratio of American to Iraqi population is about 10 to 1 or (300 million to 30 million). So proportionally the effect would be about 600 Americans killed. Try to imagine the same thing happening in some city in America. Everyday!
With each passing day I am shocked that the ignorance our leadership has demonstrated during this conflict as well as those who have enabled its continuation. George, Dick, the rest of the cabal.
I am very disappointed in my representative, Randy Kuhl. It seems he is stuck in a bad “Father knows Best” episode. We don’t get to pick our parents, but we do get to elect our Representatives. In this case Randy doesn’t know best.
Read General Odom’s Op-ed in the Washington Post.
Reading Odom’s op-ed, you realize that staying isn’t an option, so we will pull out. When we pull out, we will leave a mess. The point is for all politicians to get over how big the mess will be. It will be be a big mess and the longer we stay the bigger it gets.

[...] We passed another casualty milestone in Iraq. I’m not big on milestones - I mean, so we crossed the official 4000 tally of dead soldiers in Iraq. So is the 3397th somehow less important than the 4010th? I think not. A year ago I wrote about Gen Odom’s op-ed piece in the Washington Post. Go check it out. Has anything really changed in a year?
