Rating our 2006 Congressmen
The National Journal has rankings out on how liberal various members of the 109th Congress were during 2006. I’m not sure how they compile these scores, but they seem a bit different than what one would get if you simply tabulated votes with Bush as “conservative” and votes not with Bush as “liberal” (this isn’t that surprising given that Bush is much closer to Ted Kenned than Tom Tancredo when it comes to immigration). The results are fairly interesting. On a scale of 1 to 100 (it’s pretty much a percentile score where the number represents what percentage of Congress is less liberal than you are, but it’s been tweaked in some I don’t understand), here’s how our local Congressmen stack up:
Slaughter, Louise, D-N.Y.-28 91.3
Walsh, James, R-N.Y.-25 43.7
Kuhl, Randy, R-N.Y.-29 33.3
Reynolds, Tom, R-N.Y.-26 33.2

I find it surprising that Walsh is actually rated as one of the more liberal republicans. Since I’ve also been an upstate NY guy I guess I shouldn’t be, although only recently have I begun to not feel on the fringe.
