Give Carrie Andrews some credit and read her essay

Read her column in Tuesday’s D&C. Awesome. Read it before it heads off to the D&C archive. Her essay is about celebrating diversity and its value in society.

I found this section simply amazing.

I was honored to be elected to represent the 21st Legislative District in the County Legislature in 2005. I joined three other women serving in the legislature. We are now four out of 29 — hardly representative of women, who make up 50 percent of the Monroe County population.

I am in the company of three African-American men, again out of 29 legislators, and one Hispanic man. It is worth noting that all of these representatives of color — Jose Cruz, Willie Joe Lightfoot, Glenn Gamble and Calvin Lee Jr. — are Democrats. On the Republican side of the aisle, there are no faces of color. And, quite frankly, that assessment includes the county executive’s administration.

Why is this statement true?

A great essay on the value of diversity in society. It is easy in our society to forget about it especially if you, like me, are in the social majority.

Carrie, thanks for writing about the value of diversity so clearly. Everyone else Go read it.

Please read this article and then post a comment. There are a bunch of snarky comments by regular conservative rag readers which need to be challenged.

Whoa, did anyone read this comment:

What’s all the fuss over diversity? We have been a diverse country for hundreds of years.

What do you say to a thing like that? I mean, really. . . .

Yes, I read it and that’s why I think that it’s important for those of us with still functioning gray matter to post a comment in support of Carrrie’s fabulous letter. Don’t bother responding to the Neanderthals.

Great catch. Sad testament of the human will to look beyond shallowness.

OMG. And “hundreds of years?” That also makes me think of job listings where they say, “10 or more years Windows XP experience required.” Except, um, XP’s only been around for like, 5.

My comment on DC:

Carrie illustrates a stark void in Monroe County Legislature and beyond.
Government and elected bodies should be a reflection of their constituents. This creates a healthy environment in which cultures, thoughts, and ideas can come to the table and be deliberated in an open and fair manner. That in an essence is the prinicple of Democracy and I am glad Carrie is an advocate for this unalienable right.
