Steve, find something else to talk about - this is a non-issue.
I would think Steve Minarik would have better things to write about than the Pledge of Allegiance. I mean with an Election coming up, looming MC Budget gaps because we are running out of 1 time financial infusions, Property taxes, porn in the library and all that. Geez, next thing you know he will be trying to define the legal rights of people who love each other.
But Steve needs to talk about the Pledge of Allegiance. So here we go.
I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.
What does Steve want? A uniform policy in the Rochester City School District for saying the Pledge. Why?
The Democrat and Chronicle recently uncovered that many districts, including the City School District, have no uniform policy requiring their schools to recite the Pledge of Allegiance. As a result, many schools do not participate in reciting the pledge, and many of the schools that do broadcast the pledge over the public address system do not require students to show respect for our nation by standing in silence.
Steve allow me to introduce you to the Supreme Court, Supreme Court, Steve.
In 1943, the Supreme Court overturned Gobitis and ruled in its Barnette decision (319 US 624) that school children could not be forced to recite the Pledge as a part of their school day routine.
What was that? 1943? What were we doing then? Fighting Imperial Japan and Nazis. OH, My GOD (oh yeah, under God wasn’t in the pledge then, that happened in 1954).
Allow me to tell you how the story ended. America Won, Nazis and Imperial Japan were defeated. We did it without forcing children to recite the pledge. This is a non-issue. Steve,
Go find something else to talk about. Figure out a way your party can bring jobs to Monroe County. Help grow upstate NY. Help make sure my kids have opportunities to stay here instead of positioning your party to turn off the lights in Monroe County.
Instead of berating the schools, help ensure they have what they need to produce the next greatest generation.
Or is that all you have?

I wrote this post this morning and posted it this evening I just saw the comments in the D&C forum and Steve isn’t fairing well in the comment section.
