LTE Rebuttal of the Day

Democrats are stuck on defeat

Following President Bush’s announcement of a troop surge in Iraq, you published an editorial entitled, “Stuck on victory.” It seems to me that you and the Democratic Party are stuck on defeat.

After the death of 18 brave Army Rangers (one battered body was dragged through the streets) in Somalia, Sen. Hillary Clinton’s husband pulled our troops out to avoid further casualties in the polls. Osama bin Laden said then he knew America could be beaten because we were weak and had no stomach for war. On Sept. 11, 2001, 3,000 Americans died in a matter of hours. It would have been worse but for the grace of God and, the actions of the brave passengers of Flight 93.

This enemy hates us and intends to destroy us. Your words and those of the many Democrats in Congress (along with a few Republicans) are giving encouragement to our enemy. Give our soldiers whatever they need, let them do whatever it takes.

To quote Vince Lombardi, “Winning isn’t everything; it’s the only thing.”

Couple of Points, DD:

1) Bin Laden… who the hell is that? Thanks to the Republican party, we’re so neck deep in Iraq, that we clearly don’t have time to think about other problems. When 2,973 people were killed on September 11th, Democrats and Republicans were united in their goal to bring Bin Laden to justice. So how come we’re in Iraq?

2) Stuck on Defeat? I don’t know if you noticed or not, but a couple bombs going off everyday, slashing Veterans benefits, and sending untrained troops into a warzone isn’t exactly a recipe for victory.

3) Somolia? Welcome to 2007 dude! I don’t know how blaming Bill Clinton for anything at this point will help rationalize the insanity CURRENTLY going on (and note, when I say CURRENTLY, I specifically mean not 1993) in Iraq.

4) Winning? Didn’t you read the bipartisan Iraq Study Group’s Report? Here’s a good quote from an article about it

“Baker-Hamilton group’s conclusion that the U.S. military does not have enough forces available to sustain a troop boost in Iraq. “

Not enough forces to sustain a troop boost… Well I guess Cowboys have to go with their gut rather than their brain.

DD, as a Democrat, I don’t like “defeat” anymore than you do… but I (and the majority of Americans) don’t want to sacrifice our troops to a cause we can’t, and won’t win.

J,
You made your points beautifully in your response to DD (does that stand for defeatist democrats or something, you suppose ?) I have been posting alot on the forums from the D&C and have found that there are many uninformed/misinformed people who read the D&C. It’s basically a republican rag.

Ya, D&C Forums are very rightwing… I’ve encountered a lot of anger from people over there.
