This is a Rightwing Base Building issue… nothing more, nothing less… They’re trying to turn it into a “Either you’re with us, or you’re against us” issue… You’re either for children looking at porn, or you’re against it. Pathetic, Maggie’s desperate if that’s all she’s got.

(February 27, 2007) — Let’s be honest. Setting aside computer terminals in the public library for adults to view video porn is just creepy. It used to be that you had to rent a booth at an XXX adult shop to do that.

But you know what else is creepy? Any suggestions that the downtown Central Library doesn’t care about protecting children or that the library is using tax dollars for porn.

Even with the filters in place, savvy patrons may be able to find ways to access some porn sites, while others would be unable to research breast cancer, while still others have no problem accessing images of graphic violence, texts of racist treatises, or personalized Web pages that may be targets of Internet predators.

…Good public libraries should be equalizers — places where anyone can seek knowledge; and today, they must be places where people with no other way to do so can access the incredible power of the Internet. There is no disagreement on the need to protect children. But what we need is a solution, not a sledgehammer.
