New MCDC Chair (Sort of)
Monroe County Democratic Committee Announces
Rochester, NY - Jan 27, 2007 Jim Vogel, acting chair, was elected as interim chairman of the Monroe County Democratic Committee in a county meeting held today at the Unite Hall on 750 East Ave. to replace former chairman, Assemblyman Joe Morelle.
The by-laws of the county committee state that in the absence of a chair a vote must be held within twenty days to fill the vacancy. The election of an interim chair for a sixty day period is meant to address the concern of committee members and elected officials that twenty days is an inadequate amount of time to conduct the election process. The additional sixty days will provide rightfully qualified candidates the opportunity to campaign amongst the 29 town and city committees and for committee members to then to have enough time to educate themselves on those seeking the chair position.
Nominations came from the floor first by Mayor Robert Duffy and seconded by Assemblyman David Gantt, Rochester City Councilman Adam McFadden and other city and town committee leaders who were all in favor of electing Jim Vogel as interim chair of the party for the next sixty days. Local elected officials and executive committee members mutually endorsed the idea by electing Jim Vogel. In Vogel’s acceptance speech he stated that “It has never been my intention nor desire to seek the position of county chair but, given the circumstances of needing to maintain our party’s tremendous momentum, I am honored to lead during this sixty day campaign and election processâ€. Vogel went on further to say that “I have agreed and accepted the chairmanship for the next sixty days because I believe in a fair and open processâ€.
Jim Vogel has been the Executive Vice-Chair of the Monroe County Democratic Committee for two years, Democratic Committee leader of Brighton for five years and a Brighton Town Councilman for seventeen years.
