The Bill Nojay Show: Because you can’t have too many local conservative shows

So, alert reader thehepcat pointed out that Bill Nojay now has a local radio show on WSYL. Who’s Bill Nojay? Politically, he was a primary challenger to Randy Kuhl in 2004. He’s a lawyer who was also chairman of the Rochester-Genesee Regional Transportation Authority (RGRTA).

I haven’t had a chance to listen to his program, but WYSL station manager Bob Savage trumpets Nojay’s show:

…we’re excited about Bill Nojay, who is primarily interested in improving life around here.

I’ll reserve judgement, but in searching for info about this program, I came across this critique on a broadcasters message board (emphasis mine):

I had the opportunity to hear Bill Nojay on WYSL while traveling to Buffalo this afternoon and if I am allowed a first impression I must say that I was not impressed. I thought this show was designed to discuss the upstate economy. Instead it was nothing but another right-wing conservative critical of Liberals. (I happen to be registered to vote but not with any political party, just in case anyone wants to know)

Nojay’s constant hammering of Congresswoman Louise Slaughter and her position on the issue of a Fairness Doctrine wore thin after a while. I happen to support the Fairness Doctrine and also believe that Reagan and Clinton were wrong in supporting deregulation and the Telecommunications Act; both of which opened the door to allow companies like Entercom, Clear Channel, Cumulus and others to monopolize local radio. As a well known Republican one would think that Mr. Nojay would support the idea of competition instead of monopolies. And he also used the L word (Liberal) like it was something to be scorned. It was liberal lawmakers who passed Social Security, which I am sure Mr. Nojay will be happy to collect when he retires, along with Medicaid, Medicare, the Civil Rights and Voting Rights laws. I don’t want to turn this into a discussion of one’s political views, but I am just tired of the divisiveness in this country. I hope that the Bill Nojay Show sticks to its theme of commenting on our local economy and ways to resolve issues impacting us instead of just being another mouthpiece for the conservatives. God knows we have enough of those already on the air.

How is what Mr. Nojay is doing helping this area again?

Has anyone heard his show and care to comment?

We already have Lonsberry, what’s Nojay adding?

Oh, and that’s rich that he’s against the Fairness Doctrine. I’m against people competing with me in my profession– I’d rather have a monopoly on my job, but welcome to America.

  2. The conservative bent of the talk show is not surprising given Bob Savage’s, WYSL Owner/GM, poltical leanings. For example, Mr. Savage recently served as Host and MC of Assemblyman Joe Errigo’s fundraiser in Henrietta. Assemblyman Errigo is an unapologetic conservative.

  5. It’s strange that we have so much crazy right-wing talk radio around here.

But I will say that these guys aren’t that bad compared to what you see elsewhere — Michael Savage and Melanie Morgan make Lonsberry look like Al Franken.

Good Lord, no! It’s an invasive parasitic species, don’t let it get away so it can spawn! Club it over the head and land it, just be sure to wear gloves so the slime and stink doesn’t stick to your hands.

WSYL is just terrible. Quinn and Rose sound like they’re on some college station. Laura Ingraham is a bonifide card-carrying racist and so is her doppleganger Tammy Bruce, Bill Nojay is obviously the owner’s pet and justs loves saying Obama. Dennis Miller the quinessential loser has finally found a home on this rag tag station. How does this station remain financially viable with this crappy programming?
