Newspaper Guild vs Gannett

I authored the original post about this and wanted to point out it has created a lively discussion in the comments section about the relevance of the dispute, the union representing the newspaper people and the future of unions.

Steve Orr, President to the Newspaper Guild responded in the comments section. Excellent read and I would urge everyone to read, review and comment.

I posted because after 14 years, I didn’t think the community overall knew about the issue or perhaps even cares which adds leverage to Gannett.

That is not good. The collective “we” believe that the D&C is supposed to serve the community. Unfortunately, the purpose of the generic corporation is to maximize shareholder value. Given a management choice between serving the community and maximizing value, well, in an era where value is measured every three months - “value” wins.

So, enjoy all the boiler plate newspaper copy that is telling you how to prepare for winter and to clear the snow off tree limbs?

Are you enjoying all the reprints of the various wire services because it is less costly that actually reporting news yourself (and fills column width).

Oh, has the D&C newspaper reported on this labor dispute?

Trouble is that the choice between shareholder value and serving the community is not a mutually exclusive choice. One does not have to sacrifice one for the other.

This an underlying of truth of progressive values of which Unions have played a critical role in the past.

It is about the Pie stupid. Specifically the apple pie, (throw motherhood in as well) and defining how big is the pie. One side believes that the pie is only so big and your piece gets bigger by taking pie from someone else. The other side believes that you can grow the pie.

I believe it to be a false assumption that fair pay, benefits, and work place safety, all the things a typical union seeks for its members is in conflict with corporate interests.

Again - look at Costco as a philosophy. It seems everyone wins, employees, management, customers.

Read the article in the post but I believe it is partly unionized. Costco is a retailer used as an example that business desires (profit growth etc) don’t conflict with employee desires (fair wages etc).
