Funky Junk at the County Leg

Can you tell I’m all jacked up about the county legislature these days? Well, you guys did vote for “investigative pieces”, and then the “County Leg scorecard” as the 2nd place thinger-dinger you want us to focus on. So we want to make sure you get your money’s worth.

And to do it right we need to look right into the dark heart of the seamy underbelly of the leg, mixing metaphors as we go, and understand just what the heck’s going on there.

It’s not easy. In typical closed government fashion, they put up roadblocks every step of the way to make it as difficult as possible for an ordinary mortal, like me, to even get the text of the crappy crap they’re voting on.

As a citizen, I shouldn’t have to have and call on sources in the Leg to find out about legislation that’s going to affect me, my neighbors, and my kids. It should be right out there on the monroecounty.gov website, under the “Government | County Legislature” section.

Go and look out there. Go ahead, I’ll wait… (time passes…) Sure, the history of the Leg is interesting, but note there’s not even frigging directions to the place, let alone the text of stuff they’re going to vote on. The message: don’t get involved. Don’t come, don’t speak, don’t worry your pretty little heads. It’s no wonder people are disgusted and give up on local politics.

There oughta be a law. In fact, one of the Dem legislators did propose recently that very thing– to post the text of legislation on the web, but it got shot down by the GOP majority.

More on your closed county gov’t, courtesy of the majority GOP, in a little.
