State Leg closes down for year; looks like no raise will happen

From the D&C:

A special legislative session Wednesday consisted of closed-door meetings and idle lawmakers hanging around the Capitol — but no agreements on sex offenders, charter schools or even pay raises for legislators.

Good. That crappy sex offender and charter school legislation should be off the table now that Pataki’s outtie.

“Our members expressed that they wouldn’t be extorted,” said Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, D-Manhattan, referring to the possibility that Pataki would OK a pay raise in return for approving an expansion in the number of charter schools, an early-retirement plan or other issues he wanted.

Read: “Pataki shouldn’t be able to extort the Assembly and Senate, that’s for me and Bruno to do.”

Maybe they heard from enough of us that they thought better of the raise. I’m disappointed that the simple reforms the Albany Project suggested weren’t adopted– it’s hard to find a more effective lever for promoting reform than the carrot of a pay raise.

Update: lipris over at Albany Project has a much better title for this: It’s Over. Timothy’s Law: Yes. Pay Raise, Other Crappy Crap: No.  Well done, my friend.
