D&C: Stop the GOP shutout of Dem ideas in the County Legislature
Cripes, I don’t know how much extra coffee they had today, but dang if they’re not hitting on all cylinders. The Editorial Page is 3 for 3 today! Go there and read them all, they’re great, but I’ll be blogging the 3 editorials in separate posts. Yes, they’re that worth it.
More collaboration
County executive and GOP lawmakers can do much better.[...]there is much public concern about this year’s first billion-dollar-plus budget and projections for huge deficits in the foreseeable future.
This untenable situation is all the more reason why Brooks, who rode into office on a theme of collaboration three years ago, and majority Republicans in the Legislature must start working more with minority Democrats.
[...] Virtually ignoring the minority party may have worked for county GOP Chairman Steve Minarik and his followers in the past, but that was then. Remember, Democrats aren’t only regaining power in Washington and in Albany, but they’re starting to make headway here in Monroe. [emphasis mine]
It’s true. But it shouldn’t even be fear of losing power that motivates them– as our elected leaders, they’re in OUR employ, despite what Minarik would like to believe. And ignoring the Dems completely is not just taxation without representation, it’s dangerously myopic.
For example, EVERY Dem proposal in the Leg has been shot down by the majority in the last few years. You don’t have to be a partisan Dem to know that there was at least ONE good proposal in there. Oh, and it doesn’t count when you shoot down a Dem proposal because you want to re-introduce it as a GOP one or as part of Brooks’ budget. Time to clean house.
Man, I’m loving the Ed board’s clarity today. This is what the 4th Estate is all about.
