Worst president ever?

The Washington Post has a terrific round-up of historians’ opinions about whether or not Bush is the worst president ever. One ranks him as the worst ever, another as fifth worst, another suggests he may be the worst but that it is too early to tell, another says he’s in the bottom tier but probably not as bad as Nixon, and the last — a conservative historian who once worked as a Bush speechwriter — says it is too early to tell that but that history may vindicate him.

I think the opinion of the conservative historian is telling. Even someone who spends much of his article taking gratuitious swipes at “left-leaning historians” and “liberal policies” can’t bring himself to say more than

Things may look grim today, but that doesn’t ensure a grim future.

Here’s the articles:

Move Over, Hoover (by Douglas Brinkley)

He’s Only Fifth Worst (by Michael Lind)

He’s the Worst Ever (by Eric Foner)

At Least He’s Not Nixon (by David Greenberg)

Time’s On His Side (by Vincent Cannato, the former Bush speechwriter)

They’re all worth reading though I find this find this claim from Douglas Brinkely to be pretty laughable:

I also believe that he is an honest man and that his administration has been largely void of widespread corruption.
