Randy Kuhl on Social Security — lying or just forgetful?
Randy Kuhl’s latest ad, rightfully termed “offensive” and “disgusting” by Exile and others in a recent post, uses a sniper rifle scope aimed at seniors to take Massa’s words on Social Security out of context (The Rural Patriot lays waste to the falsehoods in the ad much better than I can). But what caught my attention was Kuhl’s statement at the end:
I regard Social Security a sacred trust. That’s how I voted.
Let’s do a “Reverse Randy”, and instead of taking statements out of context, we’ll put Kuhl’s statements IN context. I compiled a timeline of Kuhl’s actions and statements about Social Security since he took office in January, 2005. It’s very revealing when you lay it out. (Click on the image to see the whole thing in a new window.)
Allow me to walk you through it. Kuhl spent most of 2005 trying to privatize Social Security, even going so far as to introduce a bill (HR 3913), on his own, that would allow a board of presidential appointees to invest the Social Security surplus without any restrictions.
Once word came down from HQ (the White House) late in 2005 that SS privatization was on hold for the moment, House Republicans (including Kuhl) turned their attention to pushing Medicare Part D. Seniors know how well that plan is turning out. So while Kuhl laid low on this for the first part of 2006, advocacy groups for seniors were issuing damning reports on his low performance for retiree issue.
Come late 2006, and, whoops! There’s an election. And turns out, folks are generally against privatization. So you get denials and promises, regardless of any rumblings about picking up privatization in 2007.
From my wife, an everywoman whom I can always count on for the money quote:
It’s unbelievable…he’s just a total liar. He’s just saying whatever he wants.

In the winter/spring of Bush’s Social Security barnstorming, Kuhl also had tons of paper from the administration at his town hall meetings - I have one outline that is signed “compliments of Randy Kuhl” with all the scary-scary everything’s bankrupt line. In fact at his first town hall meeting in Corning, he put up a big posterboard with the infamous filing cabinet full of “empty IOUs”. Keep talking to everyone you know about this horrible distortion.
