Prog Roch Blog Watch - 10/20/06

  • * DragonFlyEye has a good one on finessing your vote to support 3rd parties like Working Families while still voting for your candidate. I’ve done this for the past few elections, and I recommend it.
  • * A couple of my favorite writers from the City paper have a blog now (and we’ve added it to our blogrolls). The Inner Loop has local, political, and local political posts about their take on the recent Majority Watch poll, the recent AG debate, and the strange silence of the GLBT community over the Foley scandal. Oh, and they hipped me to this hilarious remix of Reynolds’ apology ad.
  • * TF29 systematically destroys Bob Lonsberry’s attack on Maj. General Batiste, who had harsh things to say about Kuhl & his assessment of how things are going in Iraq. One thing you may have noticed: Rotten Chester does NOT suffer fools gladly. (Note to self: bake some cookies for him to stay on his good side.)
  • * Roch-cha-cha’s Man About Town gets jiggy with Ren Square plans and the Journal American Building.
  • * I just got Mappoint as an early Christmas present from a friend of mine, so if I’m able to figure it out, start expecting groovy electoral/political maps to spring forth from RT anytime now. I’d ask for mapping requests in the comments, but one thing I’ve learned from 15+ years of software development, folks are fairly devoid of ideas until they start seeing something. We’ll see if my first baby steps get your juices flowing.
  • * Local progressive campaigns (see middle column) can use your donations (no matter how small), and your time (even 1 hour between now and election day)!
  • Now more than ever! And things like lit drops don’t even require you to interact with other life forms, so don’t be scared. Volunteering is one of the most fun and empowering things you can do– connect with like-minded people! Know you’re making a difference! And come election night, no matter what happened, know that you did something to help.

BTW, I just scored an exclusive on a new toy for the website that I’m not allowed to tell anybody about yet. Let’s just say that Time.com likes it, and leave it at that. . . .

Lonsberry plays the fool when it suits him. He’s no fool - he’s smart and cagey.

The only reason that sending voters to the WFP line scares me is that Robach secured that line for himself. Is he in favor of living wage? No. Is he in favor of CMCE? No. But when 24 people met to select candidates, the room was split between cross-endorsing Robach (the UAW voting members having been directed to do so) and not endorsing any candidate (there was no Democratic candidate named at that time). Voting WFP with a clear purpose for a particular candidate can communicate something if everyone knows what the message is that they are sending. But if it’s just to say “No” to both of the Big-2, it doesn’t make as much sense.

Thanks bythepeople!

Agreed wpowell. The message people are sending by voting on the WFP line is for good jobs and universal health care and bringing the troops home from Iraq.

On saying no to the big-2, independents and swings are familiar with the 2 major parties and have chosen not to affiliate with them, but if they still plan on voting then they’re more open to a third party. Or, if someone doesn’t like either of the major parties but wants to vote for their candidate, voting for that candidate on a third party line can be pretty appealing.

This case study from the Bishop race illustrates my point.
