Worst reason to support a candidate yet
A reader writes into the Elmira Star-Gazette to encourage people to support Randy Kuhl because:
He was instrumental in getting the Senate of the state of New York to issue a state resolution (II63) in April 2001, stating that April 6 each year in the state of New York be recognized as Tartan Day.
Kuhl’s courageous support for an obscure pseudo-holiday honoring Scottish-Americans, a day the reader admits “is still being ignored by much of the media” — that’s proof, in this reader’s words, that “U.S. Rep. Randy Kuhl and Gov. George Pataki are men who really care about our society.”
Some voters are easy to please, I guess. Don’t get me wrong — as long as I don’t have to eat haggis or wear a kilt, I’m all for observing Tartan Day.

It was actually tartar day sponsored by the American Dental Association but the Clerk of the Assembly misspelled it. The Scottish have no plaque in any case.
William Wallace says that only the British would vote against Randy Kuhl.
FREEDOM!!!!!!
You should also reelect Jim Walsh because Ireland is one of his top “issues.” As an American of basically British Isle descent, I should probably switch teams and vote Republican since they care more about that region than America. Meh, maybe not.

You wonder if they buy that on Tipp Hill in Syracuse. You know, the one where the stoplight is upside down, with the green on top.
I’m part Irish. Maybe I should move into the 25th just so I can vote for Walsh.
I might be reading too much into this, but in some quarters the whole “Scots/Irish/British Isles Pride” thing has a strong undercurrent of white racism, especially in the South. So, like W’s allusions to Bible verses intended to pander to fundamentalist Christians, this could be a backhanded way of reminding Kuhl’s supporters that he’s the guy to crack down on all those Meskins overrunning upstate NY.
As for tartans, I’ve got no problem with them as long as you:
a) Have the legs for them.
b) Don’t mix your plaids.
c) Only wear them in the company of consenting adults.
d) Don’t assume that it gives you license to play the bagpipes in public (unless you’re a trained musician).
e) Don’t wear the silly pleated “short kilt” unless you’re a serving member of a Scottish regiment and are required to so so.
and most important . . .
f) Don’t insist on wearing them where the poison ivy is thick and the ground wasps rule.
g) wear something underneath
[...] With all due respect to any particularly proud Scottish-Americans, I feel this is a more important issue than Tartan Day. [...]
[...] Randy Kuhl –I’ll let your 90% lock step Republican vote speak for itself. Your tax dollar best spent in Iraq comments provide ample insight into your loyalty. I laugh at your commercial where you say how you are in favor of lowering taxes. What were you doing in the NYS legislature for 20 odd years? Oh, maybe I’ll change my name to Paris Hilton, or McHilton so I can be honored on tartan day. [...]
