When all else fails, blame the enemy within
It appears that former Reynolds chief-of-staff Kirk Fordham will not go gentle under that good bus. Like Indiana Jones climbing up from under that jeep to whack that Nazi guy, he’s come out of nowhere to sucker punch the House Republican leaders who left him for dead after he resigned earlier today. Here’s what Fordham had to say:
The fact is, even prior to the existence of the Foley e-mail exchanges, I had more than one conversation with senior staff at the highest level of the House of Representatives asking them to intervene when I was informed of Mr. Foley’s inappropriate behavior. One of these staffers is still employed by a senior House Republican leader.
I could have told these guys that anyone tough enough to grow up gay in Greece, NY (as Fordham did) is not someone you want to mess with. But don’t think for one minute that Hastert and the gang are going to take this lying down. It’s time for a code pink terror alert: they’re ready to blame the whole Foley fiasco on a secret gay cabal of high-level Republican staffers. I’m not making this up (you can read about it here if you don’t believe me), although I certainly wish I were.
Yes, that’s right, the plan is to say “we allowed a bunch of evil gay staffers to infiltrate our party and destroy it from within.” Will this go over with voters? Remember, this is the party that turned its failure to prevent 9/11 into its greatest political triumph, so I wouldn’t bet against it.
The question for me here is this: will Reynolds (and Rick Santorum Santorum and Henry Hyde, Bill Frist, George Allen, and Mitch McConnell, whose staffers are also supposedly part of this conspiracy) stand for a full-scale homophobic attack on their staffers? Don’t forget that these staffers are the guys who for years have been doing…whatever it is that staffers do for Congressmen (the only duty that comes to mind is making reservations at Morton’s Steakhouse). I think that Reynolds et al. won’t go for it. They say that there’s no honor among thieves, but I’d like to there’s at least a little bit of loyalty.
