Kuhl’s new ad
I just saw Kuhl’s new ad in response to the the MoveOn.org ads. I only saw it once, so I’m just going to give a general impression:
- The ad is far more dishonest than the MoveOn ads it criticizes. It claims that
- all of the votes MoveOn refers to took place in 2004, which is patently false. That applies only to the vote that involved a Halliburton contract.
- Massa (I’m paraphrasing here) “buys into every word” of the MoveOn ad. In fact, Massa has no connection with MoveOn.
- I get a strange Burt Reynolds/Keith Carradine vibe (I’m really dating myself here, I know) from Kuhl’s “I approved this message” cameo at the end. I felt like he was about to ask us what our signs were and offer to buy us Mai-Tais.
And here’s something I don’t get: if Kuhl is so thrilled with how the war is going, then why is he running from his record of support for the war?

[...] In fact, where Exile on Ericsson St of RT says the ad reminds him of Burt Reynolds/Keith Carradine, I get a distinct “Trippin’ in the Courtroom” Cheech and Chong vibe off the whole thing.ÂÂ “You see, they didn’t vote on this stuff when I was in office.ÂÂ I merely supported it.” . . . “But there is an explaination, your honour, there is.ÂÂ It appears my client merely found these drugs, and was on his way to turn them in at the time of his arrest.” Eric Massa has shot back with force, and I just got the press release email.ÂÂ He points out, quite rightly, that if you don’t want to fight an ad war, the best way to avoid it is debate, which Kuhl has refused at every pass: “Third, there are numerous debate opportunities on the table to put a real discussion of issues before the voters, and so far, Rep. Kuhl has avoided them all.ÂÂ I have a standing offer to debate ‘any time, anywhere.’ÂÂ A sample of current debate invitations, with no Kuhl response, includes: [...]
