Hillary owes New Yorkers a debate
I just went to the DFA Rochester site and the main page is an open letter to Hillary Clinton:
Jonathan Tasini defined this campaign early on as substance vs. celebrity. Your refusal to debate certainly adds credibility to this assessment. “We the people†deserve the opportunity to see you in a debate.
This isn’t about political advantage, it’s about the political system. I’m afraid Connecticut isn’t the only place where some Senators think they’re bigger than democracy.

What the heck…Hillary owes it to herself to debate if she wants to live up to the greatness some people see in her. And for someone who wants to be the first female President–and I can only assume this IS something she wants–then why not start showing some bold moves—like an awesome debate performance?
I don’t see greatness in Hillary, personally. I also happen to think that, though she might be a good president, it is a bad precedent for the first woman president to have been a former first lady. I have infinitely more respect for Nancy Pelosi, who made it herself without having been married to a powerful poltician.
One thing that makes me sad (and I say this as someone who is critical of Hillary for the most part): the brutal attacks on both Pelosi and Hillary show that we’ve got a long way to go in terms of gender equality. People are still uncomfortable with a powerful woman.
That said, we would be just as bad if we let Hillary or Pelosi slide when they screw up (as Hillary is here) because of the fact that they’re women. The soft bigotry of lowered expectations is hardly better than outright discrimination.
