Joe Errigo’s tax payer funded campaign mailing

(Bumped. Thanks for bringing this up! -btp)

My family, who lives in the 130th state assembly district, received this document in the mail yesterday from Assemblyman Joe Errigo.

Working to Create Jobs in Western New York

A nice little mail piece, though if I were the one claiming to be “leading the fight to improve New York State’s economy,” I’d prefer the economy actually be improving. That aside, the issue here is who paid for this campaign mailing less than two and a half months before his re-election.

Well, it turns out my parents did, and their neighbors did, and the people in the next neighborhood over did. It was created and mailed using tax payer dollars. You can tell because it lacks the “Paid for by the Committee to re-elect Joe Errigo,” that is required by law if it was done by his campaign. This is an abuse of tax payer dollars and is unethical.

Candidates should be barred from using tax payer dollars to send out mailings like these so close to an election and if they do send them out they should have to carry this disclaimer on the bottom…

“Paid for with YOUR tax dollars.”

This is why we need to support Dan West.

The fact that the piece does not bear the required paid-for-by-campaign statement does not necessarily mean that it was paid for with public funds. It may just mean that it was paid for by the campaign and that the campaign violated the law by not including the notice. Does your state have a governmental ethics commission or similar body that enforces campaign laws? If so perhaps this would be an appropriate case for filing a complaint with them.

Well, there are a few other pieces of evidence as well….

1. He links to a copy of this document from his official NYS Assembly web page, its not on his campaign website.

2. The return address on the piece is the NYS Assembly Building in Albany.
