Star-Gazette 1, D&C 0.
The Star-Gazette continues its great coverage of the race for NY-29 with an editorial in this morning’s paper. It hits many of the key points about this race as well as the overall political climate surrounding the Iraq war. As the editorial states, this is the most important question:
In the 29th Congressional District, which includes Chemung, Schuyler and Steuben counties, U.S. Rep. John R. Kuhl Jr.’s support of the president’s Iraq policy has left him wide open to sharp criticism from Democratic challenger Eric Massa. But are the voters of the 29th as vengeful as Connecticut Democrats?
It also makes this important but depressing point about New York’s favorite Vichy Democrat:
Democratic incumbent Sen. Hillary Clinton, who backed Bush on going into Iraq but has been a strong critic of his since, is facing an antiwar opponent in the September primary, Jonathan Tasini. Her I’m-for-it-but position allows the senator to have the best of both worlds on Iraq, and she probably won’t break a sweat in winning the primary over Tasini.
Why can’t the Democrat and Chronicle write editorials like this?

The Star-Gazette’s news coverage of the 29th, both in quantity and quality, is also the best of the area papers.
It’s scary for me to here someone say that the Star Gazette has great news coverage. The S-G is my hometown newspaper and I have to admit that for 31 years I wasn’t too overly excited about their news coverage. HOWEVER, when I visit my parents and read the paper–which recently underwent a drastic size reduction, but a huge increase in print quality–I have to agree that it is becoming a very fine newspaper. But I’m also impressed with local TV news in Elmira. They seem to be very willing to talk politics and put candidates on the air.
Randy Kuhl had his lobster moment on Elmira TV news….
