state of the unions

The New York State Union of Teachers just switched its endorsement for NY-29 from Randy Kuhl to Eric Massa. I think this is hardly surprising — as a state senator, Kuhl (like many upstate Republicans in the state legislature) was a pretty good friend to unions, but as a federal Congressman, he has voted against NYSUT’s intersts in 11 of 12 votes, according to an NYUST study.

What you’re seeing here, I think, is that you can’t serve two masters. As a state senator, Randy Kuhl voted in many ways as a moderate (we’ll do a more extensive analysis of this at some point), but in today’s House of Representatives, it’s amost impossible get away with that in George Bush’s Congress.
