D&C misses biggest stories in the Q2 numbers
The Demorat and Chronicle had a piece on local fundraising efforts yesterday that was accurate, but a bit misleading. They do mention that “The most successful Democrat in raising money since April may have been Eric Massa” and they hint at Randy Kuhl’s dependence on PACs. However, they fail to mention that
- That Massa has now outraised Kuhl for three straight quarters.
- That 2/3 of Kuhl’s money has come from non-party Political Action Committees.
- That less than 30% of Massa’s money has come from non-party Political Action Committees.
- That Massa has actually raised more money overall from individual donors than Kuhl has.
- That the PACs Randy Kuhl has taken money from are not exclusively innocent-sounding PACs like Eastman Kodak Company Employee PAC and Every Republican is Crucial PAC (the two that are mentioned in the article); he’s also taken money from R.J. Reynolds, Wal-Mart, and the so-called “Texas Freedom Fund”.
The title of the article was “Democrats have less campaign money in coffers than their Republican foes”. It should have been titled “Without R.J. Reynolds, Randy Kuhl would be in the poor house.”

TomT, you rock. This is the post I wanted to write, only better. The corporate media may be well-meaning (or not), but they do miss the boat a lot on what’s going on behind the scenes. My conversations with reporters tell me that when you’re overworked and overscheduled, you don’t have time to dig a little deeper like you did. Thanks!
