Q2 Fundraising Results - update II

Here at RochesterTurning, we’re working with the Working Families Party and WFPBlog, along with several other bloggers across the state to bring you this coordinated reporting of Q2 numbers from various Congressional races today. For other districts, see the end of this post. Many thanks to optimusprime, who beat me to it in his post below, and added some important context. To quote him:

…let me bring everyone up to snuff on the latest FEC report. The first column is Net Receipts, second is spending of receipts, this is cash on hand, and the fourth row is debt.

Name Dist Net Rcts Spending Cash on Hand Debt Qtr End
KUHL, JOHN R JR 29 $888,756 $402,905 $562,747 $0 06/30/2006
MASSA, ERIC JJ 29 $499,136 $308,156 $190,979 $78,899 06/30/2006

Though Kuhl has an upper hand, I should point out that $598,000 out of the $888,756 Kuhl has received so far are from PACs. Kuhl has received only $271,000 from individual donors. This means that Kuhl has to rely heavily on BIG$$$ from special interests and beltway lobbyists to fund his campaign. I urge everyone to donate 20…25…50 bucks to Massa.

[UPDATE: See, I was taught that if someone gives you money, you owe them something. And if someone gives you a TON of money, you owe them bigtime. Let's see, Rubberstamp Randy gets most of his money from corporate special interests. So...he must work for...corporations. Ok, so...Eric Massa gets his money from you, so he must work for...wait, don't tell me.

Who do you think is going to do a better job representing YOU in Congress?]

[Update II: From the comments: Rottenchester, who is, as usual, on top of things, notes:

Your readers might be interested in the raw reports themselves. Kuhl’s list of PAC donors is awfully damning. Here’s Massa’s

You don't have to be an expert in PACs to see the diff. Kuhl's list is many, many pages long, with a lot of out-of-state PACs contributing. Guess that explains why he's not able to represent the people of NY-29. (Massa's, by comparison, is about a page, and is either general progressive PACs or other Dem's PACs.) My personal faves of Kuhl's are:

  • US-Cuba Democracy PAC -- for all those Cuban exiles in the 29th
  • Texas Freedom Fund -- expect Randy to ride into Austin to liberate all those enslaved Texans
  • Southern Minnesota Beet Sugar Cooperative PAC -- Um, Randy, you live in UPSTATE NY, not MN. Sorry to break it to you.
  • R.J. Reynolds PAC -- supporting all those non-existant tobacco farmers in the southern tier
  • And of course the Wal-Mart PAC, so they can continue to suck the life and small business out of NY-29
  • ...and many more...

You know what I found the funniest? The sheer number of PACs with the words "Prosperity", "Progress", or "Reform" in the name. 'Cause, you know, NY-29's seen a lot of those three since Kuhl's been in office.

So thanks Rottenchester, I needed a good laugh.]

I’m working on digging up info on NY-29 voting demographics, and comparing them to OH-02 (Paul Hackett, Fighting Dem who almost won the reddest district in Ohio last year). From everything I’ve seen so far, though, this is a very winnable district. Stay tuned…

How much money is the DCCC going to kick in to Massa? They have about 23 million on hand right now. And the word is that when Emmanuel was in town two weeks ago, he was vetting Massa for DCCC approval (and money). Anyone know how much that is likely to be?

Did you notice that Massa has forty thousand more in individual contributions than Kuhl has?

Is Emmanuel interesed in electing Democrats to congress or is he only interested in electing :New Democrats”, who sound suspiciously like old Republicans?

Howdy Jay, and thanks for stopping by.

From what I’ve read, Emmanuel was originally backing some rich CEO from Monroe County to run. Massa met with Emmanuel and convinced him that he was a viable candidate, even if he couldn’t self-fund. Massa is pretty progressive, from everything he’s said and written– or are you talking about some of the other candidates Emmanuel has backed, the DLC-types?

So is it possible that the Sugar PAC thinks that Randy’s gerrymandered district actually encompasses Rochester Minnesota? They’re located in Renville, MN, less than 200 miles from Rochester, MN, nearly 1,200 miles from Rochester, NY - maybe they have the wrong Rochester!

They seem to normally fund local pols, but maybe after their bad $2,000 investment in Norm Coleman, and the $4,000 dropped on Gutknecht they’re reaching out for . . . even worse people further away? Or maybe they figure he’s not much closer to our Rochester than he is to their Rochester?

Whatever the reality is, I just love the idea of them having the wrong Rochester altogether, not finding out the truth until they drive down for a face-to-face!

And it’s not all that wacky a possibility - last year I had a car listed on Car Soup, and got a call from someone very interested who set up an appointment for that weekend. It wasn’t until he called from his cell phone being unable to find my house number that we finally figured out he was looking for the right city in the wrong state! Who knows, maybe he worked for the Sugar PAC?!

Superlative Campaign Fund Reporting at RochesterTurning.com…

I love this site, I really do. RochesterTurning has been working with other local and New York State bloggers to come up with the kind of nutsie-boltsie, hard-core info that I crave; at the moment, that info concerns the campaign reciepts of the NY-29…

The Great Sugar Beet Mystery…

Rochester Turning’s author and commentators are a-twitter with the sounds of WTF? after reviewing Randy Kuhl’s latest campaign finance report. Why would the Sugar Cane and Sugar Beet Political Action Committees (PACs) be giving Randy some, er, sugar?…
